Coder Screen

The coder screen is used to associate raw responses with codes. This is a complex screen and has many options. You can hover over any icon at any time to get context sensitive help. This screen consists of two major panels: Codeframe and Response

Application Header

Coder Header

App name

Displays the application name and version.

Codeframe question

Displays the ID of the current question, and allows the user to toggle between other questions in the study.

Organization name

Displays the user's organization.

Back To Study

Navigation menu that contains links to the different sections of the Coder application.

Support

Menu that contains Coder Documentation and Version Info.

User name

Displays admin user that is currently logged in. Clicking on the name displays a menu containing the links My Account and Log Out.

Notifications

Menu to turn notifications on or off.

Codeframe Panel

This panel contains all of the codes and code nets associated with the selected question. Menu options allow codes/nets to be created, edited, deleted, filtered, etc. Coder Codeframe

Response Panel

This panel contains all of the uploaded responses for the the selected question. This is where the user can assign codes and/or nets to the individual verbatims. Menu options allow responses to be sorted, filtered, quality control (QC) checked, etc. Coder Response

Footer Menu

Contains additional options to assist with the Coder screen, including:

Concepts and Files Screen

Displays concepts and/or files associated with the study, and provides the ability to download or view them.

Files Panel

File Options (Study files or Codeframe files)

Options available for each file listed.

File Manager Download the file
File Manager View the file in the browser. Some files are not viewable.

Coder Instructions Panel

This dialog can be used to read/modify coding instructions that help coder be more consistent when coding this codeframe. The editor contains a minimal ability to format the instructions. Coder Instruction Panel

Required Checkbox

Instruction window will not close until the coder acknowledges the reading of the instructions

Save Changes

Saves any changes to the codeframe instructions

Codeframe Stats Panel

Provides an overview of the current status of the codeframe.

Name Description
Word Count Count of Unique words across all response
Response Count Number of responses included in the codeframe
Avg Words Average words per response

Name Description
Code Count Count of codes in the codeframe
Net Count Count of code nets in the codeframe
Codes with no report value Count of Codes that do not have a report value
Codes with no input value Count of Codes that do not have an input value (optional)
Uncoded Count of codes that have not been applied to any responses
Codeframe Filter

Click the button to display the results of the Codeframe Stat in the Coder Codeframe.

Allows the user to modify different aspects of the coder screen to improve the ease of use.

Name Description
Font Size Adjust the size of the text in the Codeframe and Response panels

Codeframe Preferences

Name Description
Auto Scroll to New Items Yes/No. When a new item is added to a list where some portion is off screen this option will force the screen to scroll down to the new item.
Codeframe on the right Yes/No. Toggles the Codeframe and Response panels
Visible Code Details TotalStats/FilteredStats/Expressions/Notes. Select which code details are visible by default in the Codeframe panel.
Code And Net Colors Text/Box. Determines how code colors will be applied to a code. If Text is selected then the entire code text will be colored. If Box is choosen instead, then a small colored box will appear next to the code text.
Auto-Edit New Codes Yes/No. Control the behavior when a new code is created. If yes then the code edit window will appear after creating a code from response text.

Study Preferences

Name Description
Visible Response Details QuestionID/QuestionText/PanelID/RespondentID/Tags/RelatedResponses/ExpandedActions/Notes. Select which response details are visible by default in the Response panel.
Response Alternating Colors Changes the color of alternating response rows.
Distict Match Case Sensitive Yes/No. Determines if the distinct grouping mechanism is case sensitive

QC Checklist

The QC Checklist is a custom list of items that define necessary QC steps for Coders to sign off on.

Verbatim Word Counts Panel

Displays a list of the most common words sorted by count in descending order. Click the Create Code button to create an individual code from a word or selected multiple and click on the "Create all Selected" to create multiple codes at once. Word Count Panel

Create Code

Adds a new code for the word/phrase to the bottom of the codeframe

Create all Selected

Adds a new code for each selected word/phrase to the bottom of the codeframe

Chat Log Panel

The Chat Log panel allows you to chat with other users and see who is online. The Chat Log keeps a history of the conversation that went on in the codeframe. It could also display system messages that relate to the codeframe.

It has two tabs. Chat to view the Chat log and Users to see users and their statuses.

Chat Panel

Chat

Displays the Chat log from this and previous sessions in the codeframe. It can also display system messages that relate to the codeframe.

Users

Displays all users online that were active in the codeframe with their current status.
